Durante uma safra marcada por adversidades, como a pandemia da Covid-19, a Atvos se consolida como uma das maiores empresas de bioenergia e emissoras de créditos de descarbonização (CBIOs) do país.

In a harvest marked by adversities like Covid-10 pandemic, Atvos is consolidated as one of the largest bioenergy and decarbonization credits (CBIOs) issuer in the country.

Atvos, one of the largest bioenergy producers in Brazil, launches its most recent Annual Report. The publication presents data referring to the harvest initiated in April 2020 and concluded in March 2021, and includes the highlights in governance, economic, and socio-environmental dimensions, with focus on financial strengthening, renewal and expansion of sugarcane fields, increase in production efficiency and generation of long term results.

With the Judicial Recovery Plan (JRP) approval by São Paulo state Justice in August 2020, a new schedule for the company’s debt amortization was established. This and other actions, always based on ethics, integrity and transparence, have been addressed as priorities by Atvos, and it reflects the perception of one of its main stakeholders: the internal public. To have an idea, the company conducted an internal survey to assess the maturity of it Compliance System and 99.6% of collaborators declared to believe in a compliance culture as fundamental value to conduct businesses, 96% of them stated to be aware of the company’s compliance norms, while 92% approved the position of leaders.

Social, Environmental, and Diversity

As member of Global Compact Network Brazil, Atvos is committed to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Based on its Sustainability Policy, the company listed the 5 priority SDGs and its goals, which were associated to strategic initiatives: Gender Equality (5), Clean and Accessible Energy (7), Decent Work and Economic Growth (8), Sustainable Cities and Communities (11), Action to combat Global Climate Change (13).

In the last harvest, Atvos intensified its operations combining its production efficiency to the reinforced actions in ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance). One of the highlights in the period was the mobilization, in record time, of several areas of the company, in addition to operation, for the production of 70% alcohol in all agro-industrial units. A total of 72,429 liters were donated to 22 municipalities in four states (GO, MS, MT e SP). Added to the March 2020 volume, in the beginning of the pandemic, the company made available a total of 174,629 liters to support the surrounding communities.

Another goal achieved by the organization was the Green Energy seal in all units. The certification proves the production of clean and renewable energy, and is granted by Sugarcane Industry Union (UNICA). The company also obtained foreign certifications, like that from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), responsible for the Renewable Fuel Standard program (RFS2), and Low Carbon Fuel Standard program (LCFS), managed by California Air Resources Board (CARB), entity that promotes actions for atmospheric pollution control and to combat climate changes.

In the diversity pillar, the company counted on 15% of women in its staff – according to data from the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) this rate is superior to the 9.2% of the sector. Atvos goal is to raise this participation of women to 26% until the 2023/2024 harvest, as well as the number of women in leading positions.

Operating Performance

Even in face of a challenging scenario, Atvos reached 26.7 million tons of ground sugarcane, volume aligned with the previous harvest. With high industrial yield, the company reached 3.65 million tons of Total Recoverable Sugar (TRS) mass processed, 1.7% increase against the 2019/2020 harvest.  The company was also responsible for the production of 2 billion liters of ethanol and 426 thousand tons of VHP (Very High Polarization) sugar, in addition to co-generating 2.8 thousand GWh of electricity.

It is worth mentioning that, when it comes to capacity, Atvos units can mill 37 million tons of sugar, produce 3 billion liters of ethanol – which can set in motion 60 million compact cars, a processing of 700 thousand tons of VHP sugar – capable of sweetening 20 million birthday parties – , and co-generation of 3.1 GWh of electricity, enough to supply 15 million people with clean energy.

With the end of the 2020/2021 harvest, Atvos was outstanding as one of the main issuers of decarbonization credits in Renovabio program – National Biofuel Policy designed to make Brazil reach part of its goals to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the fuel matrix as defined in Paris Agreement. Second largest ethanol producer in Brazil, Atvos made available for commercialization in the period a total of 2.4 million CBios, as decarbonization securities are called. Each CBio represents 1 ton of carbon dioxide that was not released into the atmosphere, due to the use of clean fuel. With that, in total, Atvos contributed to avoid release of 2.4 million tons of carbon dioxide. In 2020, with 1.8 million securities traded, the company responded for approximately 12% of the total of 14.5 million CBios that were established as decarbonization goals last year.

“Certainly, the 2020/2021 harvest was marked by the obstacles imposed by Covid-19 pandemic, and it is important to highlight the capacity of our more than 9 thousand employees, our partners and suppliers to safely keep our level of operational excellence. We strictly follow the measures defined in our health protocols to secure our activities and also enable support to communities in the fight against the pandemic”, says Gustavo Alvares, Atvos CEO.

Atvos publishes its Report annually since the 2010/2011 harvest. The publication observes the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) methodology, the model most adopted by the main companies worldwide, which makes possible for all stakeholders of a company to obtain information on stocks and corporate results in a standard format, easier to understand and comparable to the other companies of the same segment.
