Students from Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo elementary and high schools participate in initiative that addresses the subject defined as priority by UN to be worked on in this decade
In the Environment Week, Atvos, bioenergy company, highlights the importance of restoration and preservation of ecosystems in order to maintain life. That is the theme of the educational campaign in public elementary and high schools in the cities where the company’s agro-industrial units are located. Educators are receiving digital materials on the subject defined by the United Nations (UN) as priority for the coming ten years.
For the company, the balance of economic, social and environmental responsibilities is fundamental for sustainable development. “While raising awareness of children and adolescents on the impact of human actions on the environment, we strengthen the agenda for recovery and protection of ecosystems, a commitment of the whole society”, says Mônica Alcântara, Atvos corporate sustainability manager.
Degradation of terrestrial and marine ecosystems compromises the well-being of 3.2 billion people in the whole planet, and, aiming at contributing to change this reality, Atvos participates in several initiatives to recover damaged environments.
For forest recovery, Atvos is planting 300 thousand seedlings in 181 hectares in Mirante do Paranapanema region, in São Paulo state. In partnership with IPÊ – Ecological Research Institute, the action is to connect sections of forest to form an Atlantic Forest corridor. With that, threatened animal species, like the black lion tamarin and Brazilian tapir, will have more space to reproduce and grow.
In Três Pontes Settlement, Perolândia, Goiás, Atvos promoted actions to recover an area with eleven springs. A project by the company in partnership with researchers from the Federal University of Goiás, was joined by producers and the government to jointly surround the area and plant trees to protect springs from Ribeirão Invernadinha.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, in the city of Deodápolis, Ivinhema River springs are also being recovered. The company revitalized the municipality seedling nursery with reforms in stoves and in the irrigation system, and almost the whole production is destined to reforestation of the river springs’ surrounding. In the city of Costa Rica, the seedling nursery built collaborates to make the city greener and also reforest the areas in Sucuriu River basin region.
In its agricultural activities, Atvos also adopts practices that contribute to the responsible use of natural resources and minimization of impacts, like reduction of chemical fertilizers, replacing them for byproducts generated in the ethanol production chain, and use of biological defensives for pest control. The company also conducts crop rotation, an agricultural conservation technique intended to reduce soil exhaustion based on the alternation of cultivated crops.
Thus, the company reinforces its commitment, as signatory company of UN Global Compact, since 2016, encouraging actions to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 in its operations and relations with its ecosystem.
